The Place Where Shoes Go to Die {and also, Hello.}

Hi! I’m Honest to Christina. I would bore you with the all-about-me-business {because according to my students I LOVE TO HEAR, write? MY OWN VOICE} but you can just look here. Trust me. That’s all you need to know.

Oh, that and this year, I got fat. Now, on to the first post.

*****

All of a sudden, I’m an athlete.

I know, right? What happened? One week wine-o, next week marathon runner.

Ok, maybe not quite. but I swear, I feel like I could. And it largely has to do with these.

You see {for those who don’t know me yet}, I’m a complainer by nature. And sweet-tap-dancing-jesus-christ, when I get a complaint about something, it gives me a great reason NOT to do that said something.

gripe, gripe, moan, moan.

Except that, I really DID want to get into shape. And so the hunt was on. Find the perfect shoe that doesn’t cramp my style feet.

Maybe I didn’t realize the extent of the situation. Maybe I turned a blind eye. Or Maybe I just hoped Mr. M wouldn’t notice the build up. {especially the charges}.

And he didn’t. Until yesterday, when he says,

“I went to get my running shoes…they were buried under a pile. A PILE of your discarded shoes.”

He kept reaching into the front closet, grabbing a shoe {thinking it was his} and tossing it into a pile behind him. So I did what comes naturally to me. I took pictures. {all in the name of blogging, of course}

The lighting was better outside, so now the neighbors have confirmed I’m crazy.
{sorta} Extreeeeeeeme close-up

This is less than a years worth of searching, by the by. And I promised Mr. M I would get rid of them. Regardless, he thinks I’m a bit crazy because now I have my new “feet”. Also, he’s annoyed because I won’t stop talking about them. They are Vibram 5-fingers {click for more info} and they are the best thing that has ever happened to me {maaaaybe marrying Mr. M was slightly better, but we are looking at a photo finish here}. For those of you who are wondering,

“what the heck?”

Let me tell you why.

They are created to make running {walking, yoga, etc} to be more like a barefoot experience. Apparently there is a lot of research on it, but I’m no scientist. All I know is that my feet CRAMP in shoes. They REJECT shoes. Swearsies. I put shoes on, and they practically untie themselves and shoot off my feet. Honest to blog.

Really, I live an awful life.

But now I have these.

Sweet Jesus. My feet have yet to cramp. Or hurt. Or blister. I FEEL LIKE I COULD RUN A MILLION MILES.

Disneyworld Marathon 2012, I’m looking at you.

That being said, I start my couch to 5k training next week with a running coach.

I’m seeing more and more people with these, and even one of my good friends is running the Seattle Rock & Roll half marathon in them this year. Maybe I should reconsider my recent new shoe purchase…

@Stevie, I’d be curious to hear about your friends experience w/ the half marathon. If I really do run a marathon in 18 months, I wonder if I can do it in these shoes?!

Well guys, I totally recommend them! DO IT {my apologies to your pocketbook} – just be sure to get fitted before you buy!

I have the exact. same. shoes.
I am NEVER going back to traditional sneakers! It took me about 6 weeks to build up the muscles in my feet and legs (muscles that I didn’t even know existed) and I’m prepping for my first 5K in them at the end of the month! I recommend them to anyone who wants to get serious about running!

My FI only wears them now, after I gave a pair to him for xmas (and now he has 4 pairs — have you tried the new Bikila model that they sell at CitySports.com? AWESOME).

I haven’t adapted to them as quickly. When I was doing low-mileage we kept getting hit with snow after snow, then by the time the snow stopped, my half marathon training was already on the 10 mile mark and there’s no way I can wear them for 10 miles. So months later, I’m still not converted (since I’m now training for my second half this year, and marathon training starts in 2 weeks).

I think I’ll just have to suck it up and carry my shoes around on runs with me. That’s the only way I’ll be able to build up the mileage…
