Last week, my husband went to Greenlife Grocery (in Chattanooga) to pick up some wheatgrass. He has mentioned it to me, and I just sort of shrugged my shoulders about it. After doing some research, I’m seeing how amazing this stuff really is, so I thought I’d throw it out as a suggestion.
The stuff literally smells/tastes similar to grass or what I would think dirt would taste like. Not appealing, right? If you put it in a smoothie, though, it’s barely noticeable. I put around a teaspoon or less in my smoothies, and I can still tell it’s there, but it’s not disgusting. My husband, however, said it’s pretty nasty in water, but it also suggests that it can be put in juice.
What’s so awesome about it, though? I won’t go into the (long) list of benefits of wheatgrass (which can be found here), but I’ll list a few.
- It stimulates metabolism. Um, sign me up. My metabolism is slowing down as I get older, so I appreciate anything that can help it out.
- It reduces blood pressure. My family has a history of high blood pressure, and I don’t want to be added to the list.
- It helps fight tumors. My family also has a history of cancer, so any (natural) way that I can possibly prevent cancer from taking over my life? I’ll try it.
- It can also detoxify your liver and clean up your intestines.
- Not only does it help internally, but it has benefits externally as well. It helps soothe sunburned skin, slows down the aging process, restores fertility and youthfulness, and turns grey hair to its natural color again.
Be sure to look at the list because it’s much longer than what I’ve said here. You can actually buy it in tablets, powder, juice, or you can make your own. Regardless, it sounds pretty amazing, so I think you should check it out.

Wheatgrass doesn’t gross me out. Yah, def tastes like grass. My mom doesn’t like it either. But to me, it just tastes very clean, very green, very plant-y. And it is RIDICULOUSLY good for you. Drink as much as you’re able! (Which isn’t much for me, that shit is expensive.) Just remember that as with everything else, a fresh wheatgrass shot that has just been squeezed is the healthiest, purest form. The tablets and powders and pre-squeezed juices that you can buy off the shelves have only a fraction of the good stuff. Bottoms up!

@Meg, For some reason it reminds me of sweet pickles… i have no idea why. I like to blend it in with smoothies and try to not think of pickles.

@Kelly, Haha ew! That *is* gross. I wouldn’t want to drink pickle juice either. Yikes.

@domnicella, When I drink it in juices, it makes the juice actually taste sweeter.
I’ve heard all kinds of wonderful things about wheatgrass but I’m yet to try it!

I’ve always preferred wheatgrass as a shot with a chaser afterwards.

As I was reading over the benefits I thought “wow! This stuff is awesome.” and then when I read about the grey hair thing I almost fell over myself trying to get to the store. I know, so bad, but really–turning hair back to its natural color? That is freaking AMAZING.

@Grace, I agree. Not sure how true it is, but if it’s true, it’s an amazing ingredient.

I worked in a smoothie shop once and we did wheatgrass shots there. I have not had one since, but if it comes in pill form I might be game! Tastes like licking a lawnmower – or so I imagine.
